Since most of us spend tons of hours in front of a computer on a daily basis, protecting the eyes from potential harm or damage is essential. Keep reading to find helpful tips on how to take care of your eyes while using a computer regularly.
Tip #1: Take a Break Intermittently to Relax Your Eyes
Don’t sit for hours at a stretch in front of your computer. Take a break intermittently to look away from the screen. And, you should blink from time to time while working with a computer to avoid eye strain.
There’s a rule that applies in this case, it is called the 20-20-20 rule. Simply, it means you should go on a break for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, and make sure you set your eyes on an object 20 feet away from you.
Tip #2: Close Your Eyes from Time to Time
If you’re staying in front of the computer screen for a longer time inputting data or other information, try to close your eyes occasionally and also try to blink intermittently. This will help relieve and relax your eyes for a while before resuming your task.
Tip #3: Maintain Proper Distance from Your Computer Screen or Monitor
Another best eye care tip while working on the computer regularly is to maintain proper distance between your computer screen and your eyes. The recommended distance between the computer screen and your eyes is around 16 to 30 inches. However, if you’re like most people, you may be comfortable with 20-27 inches distance. And, you should ensure that the monitor’s top side is maintaining a level that is a bit below your eye’s horizontal level.
Tip #4: Tilt the Monitor Appropriately
Gratefully, most computers have display screens that you can tilt. Therefore, you should tilt the top of your computer screen backwards, away from your eyes, making about 20 degrees (or slightly less) angle with your tilting. This will provide you with the best possible tilting angle.
Tip #5: Use Larger Fonts and Font Size
This is something I do often and have found to be very helpful in protecting the eyes over the years. You will strain your eyes less and keep a reasonable distance between the screen and your eyes when you increase your font size reasonable. If you do not want larger font size or font style for the final outcome, you can change the font size and style when you’re done working and proofreading your work.
Tip #6: Use appropriate Screen Resolution and Brightness
You would put your eyes at risk of damage with increased screen brightness. For me, very low screen brightness works greatly in helping strain my eyes less while working with the computer. When working at night, I rather switch on the light in the room than increase the brightness of the screen.
In addition, you should maintain proper color and brightness of the computer screen to help protect your eyes from potential damage. Your will be protecting your retina from impact that may likely result in weak eyesight or even blindness when you adhere to these tips.
Tip #7: Consider Computer Eye Glasses for Protecting the Eyes
There’s special computer eyeglass for people who sit behind the computer for longer period of time. You can consider getting such eyeglasses to provide extra protection for your eyes while working with a computer.
Tip #8: Use the right Kind of Chairs
An adjustable seat or chair is better than regular ones when working on the computer. This will help you assume a proper sitting position that will promote proper distance between you and your computer screen.
Tip #9: Eat Foods that Improve Your Vision
As a general eye care tip, which would also help protect your eyes while working with the computer, you should eat foods that have the potential to improve your sight and vision. Typical examples of such foods include those that are rich in Vitamins A, C, and E. Carrot is good for vision enhancement.
Finally use an anti-glare screen to mask your computer monitor.
