Diabetes is one metabolic disorder and is also referred as diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia. Generally this metabolic disorder takes place due to increase level of blood sugar. Lack of hormone insulin is also a cause of diabetes; insulin is secreted in the pancreas. This hormone plays a crucial role in absorbing glucose from the bloodstream. Hence, pancreas becomes responsible not only for regulating blood sugar but also supplying insulin, due to which blood sugar level stabilizes. Keep in mind that, lack of insulin and incapability of the body cells to react insulin are major obstacles of diabetes. These two risk factors are responsible for elevated level of blood sugar. Diabetes and high level of blood glucose has severe side effects on different organs of human body. There are 3 types of diabetes which includes type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes, among which type 2 is most common form of diabetes. Deficiency of insulin is the prime cause of type 1 diabetes. Whereas, type 2 diabetes takes place when body cells becomes incapable to responds insulin. This condition is also known by insulin resistance. Inadequate amount of insulin as well as insulin resistance are responsible behind occurrence of type 2 diabetes. The risk of gestational diabetes enhances during pregnancy. The medical condition of diabetes affects badly to several of organs of the body including liver, kidney, heart, eyes and many more. Below listed are some of the complications associated with risk of diabetes:
SERIOUS EFFECTS OF DIABETES ON YOUR BODY
•Affects kidney:-
Untreated hyperglycemia affects the functions of kidney badly and contributes to diabetes nephropathy. In case of nephropathy, small blood vessels of kidney become spoiled. Elevated level of blood sugar enables the kidneys to filter more blood. This extra pressure on the kidney affects their ability to filter blood. Diabetes is also responsible for raising the level of certain chemicals in kidney. Further, these chemicals enable small filters or glomeruli of the kidney permeable. This is because people suffering from diabetes lose protein in urine. In addition, diabetes stimulates joining of proteins which further result in scarring of the glomeruli. Therefore kidney finds difficult to filter waste products effectively, which eventually contributes to kidney failure.
• Affects heart and cardiovascular system:-
Hyperglycemia can substantially enhances risk of heart disease, coronary artery disease and cardiac diseases in long period of time. Usually this severe medical condition occurs due to deposition of fatty material within the wall of blood vessels. These conditions later obstruct the blood vessel and make them difficult to stiff. Due to which, blood circulation through blood vessels becomes impossible and induces severe conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attack, cerebral vascular diseases, hypertension, stroke, and coronary artery disease.
•Affects eyes:-
The most severe effects of diabetes on eyes that, the small and fragile blood vessels present in retina becomes damage. This happens because of consistently elevated level of blood glucose since long period. This effect is such a severe that tiny capillaries of retina become too weak and easily get brake down. Although new blood vessels formulates but still some of them are defective. This happens because of their inability to hold leakage of fluid and blood. This in turn lead to diabetes retinopathy, this is one medical condition which is linked with uncontrolled diabetes. Apart from these, there are many eye disorders associated with risk of diabetes which includes blurred vision, swelling of the lens, cataracts, loss of vision, night blindness, glaucoma and many more.
•Affects bones, feet and skin:-
People suffering from diabetes have more chances of getting affected with numerous skin conditions like bacterial and fungal infection. Besides these, people with diabetes are at a risk of low bone density and joint problems like osteoporosis. As mentioned earlier, elevated level of blood glucose is responsible for damaging nerves and blood vessels, particularly those found in extremities of the body. Hence, this condition is said to be the root cause of various foot problems and loss of sensation in the feet. In addition, if feet are not getting adequate amount of oxygen and blood then the possibilities of tiny injuries to feet like blisters, sores and even cuts become issue of concern as it leads to serious infections.
• Affects nerves:-
Nerve damage or neuropathy is thought to be biggest culprit linked with developing risk of diabetes. Basically the nerve damage linked with diabetes is also called as diabetic neuropathy. The huge amount sugar present in the blood damages the tiny blood vessel that does the work of supplying blood to nerves. The all nerves available in the extremities of body like nerves of hands, legs, feet and body are more prone to developing this condition. This condition not only affects peripheral nerves but also the autonomic nervous system. In fact, this medical condition develops large number of symptoms including vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, urinary problems, lack of sex drive, tingling and numbness in the legs, hands and feet and many more.
• Affects teeth:-
People affected with diabetes are more prone to gum diseases. In order to get rid of gum diseases and tooth loss, one needs to keep diabetes in check. Therefore, visit dentist on regular basis and take good care of your teeth on daily basis.
Apart from aforesaid health disorders, unchecked or uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to diabetic acidosis. In case of diabetic acidosis, ketones gathered in the body. When body cells become unable to use and absorb sugar, they choose the option of fats to obtain energy. Once the fat gets breakdowns, generates ketones as byproduct. The buildup of huge amount of ketones enhances the acidity of blood and tissues. This condition can result into serious complication, if not treated on time. One can cope with diabetes by adopting healthy lifestyle and with the help of medication. One need to take healthy diet, exercise regularly, lose excess weight, quit smoking and should put limit on alcohol consumption to obtain control over diabetes.
