Parkinson’s disorder is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder. Neurodegenerative refers to the breakdown of nervous system progressively. Breakdown of nervous system leads to loss of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which helps in controlling the movements like making decisions by carrying signals to brain. Parkinson’s disorder is most alike to Alzheimer’s disorder. Parkinson’s dementia stages:
We can observe 5 stages which are listed below
• Stage 1:
This is the very beginning stage which shows symptoms like slight variations in the posture, one limb will have a tremor. Changes in the expressions on face and body movements. One side of the body gets affected but not disabled fully in this stage. This stage causes inconvenience for the patient.
• Stage 2:
Patient will have regular posture, whole body gets affected, and we can see reduced disability with several issues in the normal walk. Movement of the body can become very slow and limbs turns out to be rigid. In this stage patient may respond for treatment in a very good way.
• Stage 3:
In this stage movements like walking and standing are imbalanced. There are no severe symptoms but minor problems showing dyskinesias.
• Stage 4:
This stage shows severe advanced symptoms such as problem in sleeping, speaking, break down of ANS-autonomic nervous system which makes the patient to faint frequently. Changes in the posture can be clearly visible. Affected individual has no stability in walking.
• Stage 5:
Here in this stage the disease fully developed. Patient movements like walking, standing are completely disabled and they can rest in bed and chair. Patient may suffer from pneumonia, deteriorated intelligence skill, unable to speak in a right way, bowel and bladder incontinence, motor skills are lost, during sleeping unable to turn over, anxiety, depression, weight loss etc.
Causes of Parkinson’s disease:
The pesticides and herbicides reside in the atmosphere causes failure of neurotransmitter. Severe physical or psychological shocking incidents can also be the cause of this disorder. This disorder can spread in genetic level too. Patients suffering from Parkinson’s who build up hallucinations have elevated possibility of getting dementia. If someone in a family affected by dementia then the patient with Parkinson’s disease at high risk of contracting to dementia.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease:
Symptoms like Trembling of hands, limbs, jaws, face, stiffness in muscles and trunk. Reduced movements of body this is called bradykinesia. Imbalance in the posture, dementia, and hallucination are the other symptoms. In addition to that depression and anxiety can be developed.
Treatment for Parkinson’s dementia:
There is no such treatment till date which can cure the Parkinson’s disease. There are few treatments which is helpful in symptoms reduction. Treatment comprises of medicines such as entacapone, catechol O-methyltransferase(COMT), anticholinergics, levodopa, carbidopa , monoamine oxidase, glutamate(NMDA) blocking drugs, dopamine agonists which inhibits the symptoms. To restrict the slow movements and rigidity of muscles Surgeries like deep brain stimulation is performed. Levodopa is the very effective medicine which can be taken orally with carbidopa, which avoids vomiting, nausea. Wellness programs, fitness workouts, physical therapy are included to boost up the treatment.
Massage therapy and physical therapy are helpful to strengthen the muscles. Speech therapy cures problem of swallowing and speaking. To build the strength of the body swimming, yoga, standing, walking can be useful. Balanced nutritious foods consisting of fiber foods, fresh and crisp fruits, vitamin rich foods are recommended.
